Does age really decide what you wear?
Short answer: no. ;) Longer answer: at 40, 50 or 60 you don't need a list of rules, just a few tried and tested tricks. A good cut, a pleasant fabric and a colour that instantly lights up your face do more than any "rule for ladies of a certain age". And comfort? That's non-negotiable. Because without comfort there is no elegance.
At RISK we design dresses for women, not for birth certificates. We test every model on different figures: how it fits when you sit, when you climb stairs and when you dance until dawn. This guide sums up what we have learned in 15 years of making dresses.
How to dress over 40? Dresses that make you feel confident
By your forties you usually know what you love and what you wouldn't wear for anything. And that's great. It's the perfect moment to choose cuts that define your waist, show off your legs or neckline (or both, why not) and last all day: from a morning meeting to an evening out.
Which dress styles to choose over 40?
The best ones combine a clear shape with a soft fabric:
-
Shirt dress with a belt. It looks professional at work, and after work all you need is a change of shoes.
-
Waisted dress. It defines the waist and nicely balances proportions.
-
Dress with a flared skirt. It adds lightness and looks beautiful in motion.
-
Fitted dress in stretchy knit. It highlights your shape but doesn't restrict movement.
The wrap dress: why it's worth having over 40
If we had to choose one dress for every occasion, it would be a wrap dress. The V neckline makes the neck look longer, and the tie lets you decide where to mark your waist and how deep the neckline should be. Have a look at our wrap dresses. Most of them have pockets too. ;)
Colours and patterns that make you look younger
A colour near your face can do more than many a face cream. Fuchsia, raspberry, red, cobalt and emerald brighten your complexion right away. Prefer something calmer? Go for warm shades: powder pink, peach, caramel or milk chocolate. Small floral or graphic patterns add energy to the whole look.
What to avoid over 40?
There are no forbidden dresses. There are only dresses you don't feel good in. Most often they are one of two extremes: something so tight you think about it all day, or a shapeless dark sack you disappear in. Instead, look for a cut that highlights what you love about your figure. And choose fabrics that breathe, because synthetic, shiny materials rarely feel nice on the skin.
Recommended RISK dresses for women over 40
For work we recommend a shirt dress with a belt, for evenings out a wrap neckline or a waisted midi. With heels for the office, with ankle boots or trainers for the weekend.

Fashionable dresses for women over 50: elegant, comfortable, your way
After fifty you pay attention to details: how the fabric falls on your body, whether the dress rides up when you sit down, and whether you have to keep adjusting it. Quite right. A good dress should work for you, not the other way round.
Which dresses to wear over 50? Cuts that work
-
Midi with a flared skirt. It covers the knees, moves beautifully and goes with both heels and flats.
-
Dresses with vertical seams. They draw the eye from top to bottom, so the figure looks slimmer.
-
3/4 or long sleeves. They show off the wrist, the slimmest part of the arm.
What dress should a 50 year old wear to a wedding?
One you can dance in all night without once thinking about adjusting it. Deep, rich colours work wonderfully: navy, bottle green, burgundy, raspberry. Prefer something lighter? Reach for powder pink or warm beige. Look for soft, flowing fabrics, a V neckline and gentle draping around the tummy.

Elegant occasion dresses for women over 50
For an anniversary, the theatre or a business dinner, choose a simple, well made cut in a calm colour. A knit that holds its shape means you look just as good at 10 pm as you did at 6 pm.
What dress length to choose over 50?
The most versatile length is midi, just below the knee or mid calf. It looks elegant, lengthens the legs and goes with heels, ankle boots and trainers. See our midi dresses.
Which dresses make you look younger?
The ones with movement and light: bright or rich colours, flowing fabrics, a neckline that shows the collarbones and soft draping. And the smile that appears on its own when you know you look good. ;)
What not to wear over 50?
Honestly? Anything you don't feel like yourself in. But if you want specifics: instead of a mini you keep pulling down, choose a midi with a slit. Instead of stiff polyester, soft viscose. Instead of a dark shapeless sack, a dress that defines the waist. You'll see the difference right away.
Recommended RISK dresses for women over 50
Women over 50 often choose our flared midis and dresses with draping at the waist. Why? Because they fall beautifully, don't cling to the tummy and stay comfortable from morning till night.

Dresses for women over 60: style without compromise
After sixty one thing matters: that it's both beautiful and comfortable. No choosing. ;) That's why you should go for dresses that are easy to put on, made of soft, skin friendly fabrics, in cuts that don't need constant adjusting.
Fashionable dresses for women over 60: the best cuts
-
A looser dress that falls freely from the bust. It doesn't squeeze at the waist or hips.
-
A long shirt dress (maxi). The comfort of a shirt and the elegance of a long skirt in one.
-
A simple top and a flared skirt. A classic that always looks good.
A wedding dress for a 60 year old guest
Go for bright, cheerful colours (sky blue, pink, heather, sage, cream) or deep navy. Elbow length or 3/4 sleeves, a skirt below the knee or ankle length, and a fabric that doesn't crease when you sit at the table. Then hit the dance floor!
A First Communion dress for grandma: how to choose?
First Communion is a church ceremony, so subtle elegance works best: covered shoulders, at least knee length, and light or pastel colours. A simple cut with a defined waist, made of good knit, will look great both in church and at the family lunch.
A christening dress: elegance for a family celebration
Beige, sky blue, mint: calm colours work best. 3/4 sleeves and a soft, looser skirt give you freedom when you hold your grandchild (and you will, for a long time ;)).
An elegant everyday dress for a 60 year old
A soft viscose dress, a cardigan, leather loafers and a silk scarf. Done. Just as good for shopping, a walk or coffee with a friend.
Recommended RISK dresses for women over 60
Women over 60 have fallen in love with our looser, long cuts and our dresses with godets that follow every movement beautifully. We make them from soft, stretchy knits that are gentle even on sensitive skin.

Dresses for women over 50 and 60 with a fuller figure: how to highlight your best features
Curves are not a problem to hide. ;) The point is for the dress to work with them. Cuts that draw the eye from top to bottom and don't cling to the tummy do this best.
Slimming cuts: what really works?
-
Vertical cuts and seams. They lengthen the whole silhouette.
-
Diagonal draping. It gently gathers the fabric over the tummy and hips, so nothing clings.
-
V neckline. It lengthens the neck and visually slims the upper body.
Which dress style suits a bigger tummy?
Three work well: a wrap dress with a tie (you decide where to mark the waist), a dress cut just below the bust, and a looser cut that falls freely from the bust down. In each of them the fabric drapes softly over the tummy instead of clinging to it.
Which dress is the most slimming?
A wrap dress or one with draping down the centre, in a solid, deep colour (navy, black, burgundy, graphite), with a V neckline and 3/4 or long sleeves. Fabric matters too: a matte, soft knit with a little elastane follows the body but doesn't show every seam of your underwear.
Recommended RISK dresses that shape the figure
We make our dresses in sizes XS to XL, from stretchy knits that adapt to your figure. These three models have clever tailoring tricks built in: pleats, draping and an adjustable neckline.
Recommended RISK dresses:
Universal style rules, whatever your age
Colours that give you energy
Light colours reflect light and brighten the face: cream, peach, pastel blue, pink. Prefer darker shades? Instead of black, try navy, bottle green or milk chocolate. They are just as elegant and kinder to the complexion.
Prints? Absolutely!
A printed dress is the quickest way to a good mood. Many of our prints are created together with artists, so it's a bit like wearing a painting. ;) A bold pattern looks best in a simple cut with plain accessories. And if you feel like breaking the "no mini after 40" rule, do it with opaque tights and ankle boots. It looks great.
Recommended RISK dresses:
Fabrics: what to look for
Look for viscose, modal, micromodal and cotton with a touch of elastane. They breathe, feel nice on the skin and fall softly on the body instead of forming stiff, artificial shapes. We make our dresses in Poland, and many of our knits are produced in Łódź.
Shapewear: is it worth it?
If you feel good in it, why not. Smooth, seamless underwear will make a fitted dress sit even better. But a well fitted bra changes the most: it lifts the bust and visually lengthens the waist.
How to build a capsule wardrobe over 40?
3 or 4 dresses that fit you really well are enough: a shirt dress for work, a wrap dress for every day, a dark one (navy or black) for evenings out and one flared dress for family celebrations. Add a few accessories and you have outfits for the whole year. You'll find ideas in our Wardrobe Base collection.
Accessories that make the outfit
Shoes with a comfortable block heel, a silk scarf, a bag with a clear shape and jewellery you love. The same dress with different accessories becomes a completely new outfit.
Which occasion? Dresses for every situation

Church ceremonies call for covered shoulders and at least knee length. Light pastel colours suit the spring mood of these celebrations perfectly.
Occasion and cocktail dresses
Dinner, the theatre, an anniversary: calm colours, fine fabrics and a simple cut work best here.
